Making Lace While the Sun Shines

Old Amersham is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, so it really is a very old community. It's the next town from mine, about 4 miles away, so I joined the crowds on a perfect sunny Sunday afternoon for the Old Amersham Heritage Day 2014 which was held today.

The flyer promised "Steam Engines, Folk Bands, Morris Dancing, Petting Zoo, Farmers Market, Pony Rides, Big Band, Re-Enactments, Fairground, Classic Cars, Vintage Buses, Chiltern Open Air Museum, Food and Drink, Open Buildings, Trade Demonstrations & Craft Stalls - There is Something For Everyone". I meant to pop along for an hour to take a few pictures, and ended up lingering for more than three and bagging over a hundred photos. There was so much to see and do, and there literally was Something For Everyone. Amersham Town Council, who organised it, did themselves and the townspeople proud - it was a great event.

I especially liked the miniature steam trains, the ceilidh band, the vintage vehicles, the Chesham All Girls marching band and the craft demonstrations. Particularly true to the theme of the day were the ladies teaching children how to make Honiton Lace, passing on their traditional skills to a new generation.
