Atherton tablelands
Today we drove through the wonderful atherton tablelands!
We started off with the waterfall circuit which covered three nice waterfalls: Ellinjaa falls, Zilla falls, and the Millaa Millaa falls. I personally liked the second one the most, but that was probably because I especially liked the walk. Lots of times we have been walking on paved roads through the forests, or at least well prepared roads, this one was a bit muddy. I like that! So we actually had to put some effort when walking and had to be careful where we placed our feet.
We then drove further to the Crater and the Dinner falls at the Mt hypipame national park. The crater, as pictured above, looked green from algae. Looked pretty nice. After that we went to Hasties swamp (Nyletta Wetlands). My boyfriend, the bird lover, really liked this. There were lots of birds everywhere in huge groups. Quite nice too see :)
On the road towards the next destination. we saw some more birds as there was a (controlled) fire and all the birds (of prey) tried to catch all the living animals trying to get out. We arrived at the curtain fig tree. This tree looks pretty impressive because when it died from the strangling figs it fells down on another tree. Because of that, the figs form a curtain. After the fig tree we went to Lake Eucham were we did a short stroll. We saw some fish and saw shelled turtles there.
We left the lake again and went via the Gillies Highway to Cairns. Heaps of curves in the road! I almost got carsick towards the end so was happy when it was over. As we had forgot our sleeping bags yesterday in Cardwell, we bought some new (simple) ones in Cairns. Even though the next couple of nights will be a lot warmer anyway.
