The Life Of Ponty Cyclops

For Sheepio (@sheepio)

I saw this in the Barn Inn and thought of my twitter friend Sheepio .. I am sure she will down soon for a pint! I didn't try it unfortunately, so I can't review it for you!

We were in the Barn for our last game of petanque for the season ... where did the summer go?

We were a bit late getting there due to one thing and another, so it was two quick ends to practice and straight in. We played pretty well in the first game, and edged into a 5-0 lead, we then had one bad end and dropped a 3 to allow them back into the game. It became a bit of a tussle for a while, with the game at 8-5 to us after about half an hour. We then then found and other gear, and our range both shooting and pointing and closed out comfortable winners 13-5. Once again we were 1-0 up at half time, and with dad an Clive winning, we were guaranteed a draw. We have been here before just a fortnight before, and we went on to frustratingly lose both our second games. To be honest, it wasn't looking good after half an hour. Dad and Clive we 10-3 down and we were 7-2 down despite the game being very close. We just couldn't get the rub of the green.

Slowly we dragged ourselves back into contention to draw level, and then disaster, we dropped a 4, and it looked like yet another 2-2 draw (we have 8 in all this season with one game to play). I was determined not to have yet another 1-1 record for the night. We kept on battling and kept on the pressure on the opposition, they picked up a one when they should have closed the game out, to put themselves on the hill at 12-7, but finally a shot came off for us and we picked up a 4. 12-11. Dawn put a cracking first boule in, and they threw all six of theirs without beating it .. but they were close, I threw my first and dropped agonisingly short. My second .. bang on target and finally .. FINALLY ... a 2-0 win to us. Dad and Clive lost so it meant a 3-1 win to us.

Our first seasons back statistics were not bad reading in the end .... we ended up with a -1 in the legs played and won and lost column for the entire season, which was a million times better than we ever hoped for. We never got fannied, we only lost two games twice, only once in the league, and that was our only home defeat.

Well chuffed! Can't wait until the 2015 season now!
