Gropius House, Lincoln, Massachusetts
On my way into work today, I took a detour to stop by the house which Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus movement, designed and had constructed for his family in 1938. The land on which the house stands was donated by a wealthy Lincoln landowner. Nobody could accuse Bauhaus architecture of being beautiful but it sure catches one's attention, and there is no denying the power of the concept. I walked around the estate this perfect late summer morning, and couldn't help thinking that this was an extremely good place to be if one had escaped from Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, as Gropius did. Unfortunately, I didn't think this Blip expedition through and should have used my fabulous, uncoated Leitz Summar 50mm lens for this photograph. It was made in Germany the same year that Gropiushaus was built - 1938. There are so many details of the place that caught my eye that I will have to return soon for another round.
