The ghost shag
Pointing almost into the sun and towards a very dark corner of the roadside estuary, I snapped a dark shape I thought to be a heron in the water. It wasn't until I got a bit closer I could see there was a shag on the rocks drying its wings but it flew off as a truck came around the corner. When I uploaded my photos later I found I had missed the shag, but caught its reflection.
I think the mother pukeko has got fed up with me hanging around to capture her chicks as there was no sign of any of them this morning. I suspect they have moved somewhere safe from prying photographers.
