Glenn Donnellan and the Electric Slugger
This morning the three of us went to the first Bellingham Music Club meeting of the season. The performers today were the Donnellan brothers. They are both professional violinists who grew up in Whatcom County. Grant lives here and is the concert master of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra. Glenn is a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC. Their mother Joann was one of the founders of the WSO and still plays in the violin section herself. All three of these local musicians won scholarships with the Bellingham Music Club which is in its 99th year this year.
The two brothers played a great program this morning. Glenn introduced us to the violin he made from a baseball bat. He calls it the Electric Slugger and it sounds just great. He played a baroque piece on it and it was amazing the sound he could get out of that bat. Really something! I took photos but the light was pretty dim. Most did not come out well. I almost blipped a blurry one that was quite fun and arty but decided to blip this photo instead because I was so amused with the Electric Slugger.
After the concert a large group of us headed up to Mikanos, a local Greek restaurant for our usual after concert lunch. It was great fun and we made a great deal of noise catching up after a summer off from the Music Club.
