Praying Mantis

This morning Dana asked OilMan and me in turn to say, "bunny rabbit". We dutifully said "bunny rabbit and then I asked her why. She said if you say it on the first of the month it brings good luck--she's done it ever since she was in college.

It is also Labor Day, a holiday which most people spend playing. Having had our floors refinished while we were away, we spent the day, well, laboring…and laughing at the image of David and Steve, the floor guy, going around dusting and trying to figure out the placement of all our "decor items", displaced when they moved the furniture. We think they finally threw up their hands and, in male fashion, just put it wherever they could find a space for it. I had commented to OilMan last night that I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of dust following all that sanding, but the light of day revealed plenty of it.

All those appliances I wrote about awhile ago (the ones with the little lights that shine in the night) were unplugged. The "entertainment system", which baffles both of us, was unplugged, OilMan plugged in everything, but had one left over for which he said there was no outlet. Jim came over this morning and in three seconds found the outlet and plugged it in, commenting that that was what his years of engineering school were for. The wifi was unplugged and has been acting up all day, which will give Jim more reasons to shake his head over his Luddite in-laws when I ask him about it this evening when they come for dinner. OilMan is dying to try out his new barbecue, which was delivered while we were gone.

While picking a load of flowers for a bouquet for our new neighbors, Dana found the praying mantis, happily devouring a bee, whose legs were still moving, despite the fact that she seemed to be eating its head! We let her finish her meal before photographing her. I was struck by the fact that she has assumed the coloration of the native landscape of dry grass.
