Hills near Arundel

This is an acrylic painting I did about six years ago from a photo taken on a walk with my son in the fields near Arundel. I did a much larger version for my Mum, but she became ill and then passed away before it was ready. There was a strange coincidence in that my friend K showed me a DVD from a film taken of her great grandmother and family by the BBC in the 70's (I think) which was for a five minute filler type programme. Would you believe it, these hills were in the background as this was the area where they had lived near the railway! I said to her "I think my painting is for you now" and she was thrilled and it now hangs in their lounge. I felt I'd painted it for a purpose, and the purpose just changed...

It was a weird day today - rather flat after all the activity of the last few days, with a flat grey sky. We also had the sad news that R, who used to attend our church and had only recently returned to the area, had passed away this morning after battling with very bad recurrence of the cancer she had suffered eleven years ago. She was only in her early fifties and has two grown-up children who are a bit younger than my son. So sad for them both.
