Not always a beautiful place to be

Whenever I walk up here with Angus, all worries melt away. It is a wonderful climbing area with over 600 routes and endless trails for walking. Today however, it showed its dark side. My daughter is home for a few days and took 2 friends up there to climb. They were walking up to their planned area and as they had just walked by a group on one of the bigger faces, there was the frightening sound of screaming and a climber falling to what was to be his death. His injuries were just too severe and he was heli-vaced out. He was an extremely experienced climber and they think he made a fundamental error when he clipped in to rapelle down and he was not attached properly . The kids were naturally extremely shaken by this and given a huge reality check . All three are mountain lovers who hike, backcountry ski, climb and one of them is training to be a guide and I think now that they will have a heightened sense of safety in the mountains and how important it is to "play safe" and to "stop, think, before you act"
