Elkton Community Education Center

A Labor Day weekend adventure, is what we had today. Every year, the little community of Elkton, OR, offers an amazing time of culture and education. What began as a butterfly garden, now has several gardens, shops, a cafe and Fort Umpqua. It was very difficult to choose between the many fantastic characters found in costume at the fort, like the gentleman here who was showing the children how to play one of the old card games played by the pioneers. The monarch butterflies were beautiful, but I kept coming back to the photo where I couldn't resist catching a photographer in action along with the character. In the Flickr Album, you'll see the photographer spot me taking their picture. After that, he took another picture or two, then moved. I wasn't sure if he was uncomfortable with me photographing him, or if he assumed he was in my way of the shot of this gentleman.

Another interesting photo in the album, is a woman who is sitting atop a specially made chair for hand work. I assume it is to raise the knees to give better support to the lower back, but it allows very little room for squirming...which I would have to do to keep from getting too stiff. She doesn't look all too happy up there.

The Community of Elkton has worked hard together to reconstruct this old fort. They work as volunteers, but they hire students from the school, for training and work experience. It is an excellent example of a small community making sure the next generation is prepared to take the lead.
