Watling Street?

The Old Dover Road in Canterbury seems to follow the course of Watling Street which was the first great Roman road in Britain. This week and last they have been excavating part of Watling Street where it passes through the Westgate Gardens. I learned from an archeologist that the road fell into dis-use in the 4th or 5th centuries (AD) when Canterbury itself dwindled and fell into rack and ruin. At that time the Roman city was all but abandoned.
