Visit To Great Great Grandad's Grave
The weather was a little rubbish so we decided to drive up to the Somme and pay a family visit to john Millward's grave. He was my Grandma's Dad and was killed in August 1916 at Deville wood on the Somme and was a member of the Sherwood Foresters. My Grandma was just six at the time. Of course this meant nothing to Arthur and Annie. Arthur ran around the grave yard and Annie grinned as her photo was taken. I actually found this rather moving. Two little children, so full of life and the direct descendants of this man who had been killed 98 years before, almost to the day.
We then moved on to the Canadian memorial at Beaumont Hamel and Arthur kept saying he was climbing Misty island as we went up the winding path. Helen had never been before so I was able to tell her all about it from my many years taking year nine over.
A very good and moving day.
