Day 15 - Inchnadamph to Tonge
As you can see, we are a very, very long way from everywhere and anywhere, except the Oasis Bar...and John O'Groats.
No time to stop at the Oasis, but we are now within spitting distance of the finish.
Today was a medium length day at just under 75 miles (120km), but with more than 6,000ft (1,900m) of climbing: three really large and tough climbs (500 to 1,000 ft each and 15% type gradients) and six or so smaller hills of about 250ft each but also steep gradients. Remember, the rule of thumb is 10% or more is "loss of sense of humour" steep. As you can imagine there was some serious losses of senses of humour today and quite a lot of cursing (not by me of course - I'm a lady).
At lunch I had baked potato with haggis. It was truly delicious, although I have made everyone promise not to tell me how it is made. I am disappointed that we have spent a week in Scotland and there has not a deep-fried Mars bar to be seen: if would have been perfect refuelling.
We were dry almost all of the day apart from the last 15 minutes when the skies opened and dumped an enormous volume of water on us: despite all the right gear we were soaked to the skin. But we were just happy that we were at the end of the day and not the beginning.
Despite the hills and the rain we were in early. No washing tonight, so a little more relaxed before the final push tomorrow, which is just as well: we are all now shattered. Knowing that tomorrow will bring an equally hilly day, the only thing keeping us going is that the distance will be a little bit shorter than today - and then it is all over!
