Marcus Cocceius Nerva Augustus
I was downtown this afternoon doing a few bits and pieces and came across Marcus Augustus again. Magnificent statue of the man who commanded the garrison of Glevum and founder of the city which became Gloucester.
He named the city, Glevum, after the Emperor Colona Nerviana Glevensis who is rated as one of the '5 good emperors' of Rome although his reign was very short, AD 96 to 98.
The statue always reminds me of my time in Moscow when I often passed the statue of Uri Dolgoruky, translated as Uri the Long Armed, in Teverskaya Square. He is also credited with the founding of a city, in this case it is Moscow.
