Up On The Roof
CoffeePotter and I went on a bike ride today, short and gentle, although she might dispute that description, to try to overcome her phobia of having fewer than four wheels for support.
We saw this thatcher plying his ancient craft at a house in the next village and started taking a few pictures, whereupon the owner appeared and, pleased by our interest showed us the house. It is mentioned in the Doomsday book goes back to Saxon times and is built into an earth bank. The roof at the back therefore, goes down to ground level. Most unusual . The straw is long straw from Somerset. The short lengths of ladder going across the roof are hooked firmly on to allow the thatcher to move sideways as he goes about his work.
He also showed us the inside of the cottage. It looked very cosy, but I think I would have a permanently bruised head from the low ceilings. Luckily we still had our cycling helmets on so injury was avoided.
