Of Little Consequence

A Chink of Light

Today I had a lovely memory of my mum.

I was driving to Crouch End in our battered London Cab, the radio has recently gone a bit mad and jumps from station to station. So you only get to hear snippets of this and that. It was jumping all over the place, London Radio, Kiss, Magic, Radio 4 ... Then a piece of music began, I didn't know it immediately but found myself humming along to it, surprised that my subconscious knew it.

After a good few seconds I realised it was the theme to The Onedin Line ( I've since found out that it is Adagio from Spartacus). It took me straight back to when I was 7 or 8 years old, when we lived in a bungalow in a village near Witney. My dad used to work away during the week, I can't remember where .

I used to really look forward to him leaving on a Sunday night, every week when he had gone, my mum would make us a fried egg sandwich each, with salt and black pepper. We would huddle up on the sofa together, eating, just in time for The Onedin Line.

This piece of music played almost the whole way through before jumping off to something else.
