It's the summer of '76.....
.....there's a heatwave across Northern Europe and we're sweltering at its epicentre in Brittany.....
This was taken in Morlaix, or rather somewhere on the agricultural outskirts, at a Folk Festival/Celebration of Breton Culture extravaganza.....the campsite consisted of baked, cracked earth littered with all the bent tent pegs that hadn't made it into the concrete-hard ground.....and lots and lots of saggy tents......
The low-wire walking model reeked of petrol (he was a fire eater/probable fire hazard on the side) and yes, he's wearing a clown's nose....
The whole event felt somehow medieval, especially some of the 'fairground entertainments' on offer....Tournez le Lapin for example, a rabbit under a basket on a turntable surrounded by numbers and lettuce leaves, give the bunny a spin, lift the basket and whichever number (lettuce leaf) it chose was the winner....money changed hands.....
And then there were the 'snake dances' that went on until the early hours....hypnotic stuff.....or maybe that was just the rough cider.....
We brought some Camembert home with us......the car never really smelled the same after that.......
And talking of smells, my kitchen is redolent with parfum de chat humide this morning, they're steaming gently in their radiator hammocks after a damp start to the day (hence another dip into the slide vaults).....I suspect I won't be wandering far....
