Low Side
Our terrace dates to the 1840s. Originally they were workers' cottages for the woollen mill in the village which at one time spun wool from alpaca. Also originally they were two roomed houses on low side for couples, with two storey family houses up above opening on to the street on high side. When we moved in there were stone flags on the floor and next door's house had a 'keeping cellar' which extended across the back of our kitchen on the ground floor. They were supposed to pay us one penny a year for its rent!
I love coming home, especially on a chilly evening when the lights beckon and the steam from the central heating outflows can be seen in the air - bet the Victorians wished they had central heating!
