For my graduate degree, the final requirement to graduation is to take on a 3-month internship. There are no real guidelines for it except for it to be related to international conflict resolution and development somehow. I couldn't have dreamed of a better internship then the one I finished today.
My supervisor and the Country Director of the Mercy Corps Jordan office threw me a little going away party with the office today. I wasn't expecting that at all. I was expecting to say goodbye and thank you to a few people that i worked closely with and then kind of just quietly slip out. I hate saying goodbye's or drawing attention to myself. i get very shy when people compliment me, but it was very sweet.
I was there for a year and loved it. Instead of doing 3-months with MC, I did almost 12. I wanted to get as much experience as I could and I can't believe how much I got. I'm really going to miss this office, the people, the challenges and everything else that came with it.
My supervisor offered me tasks that I knew nothing about, like Program Management, and allowed me to fumble along, make mistakes and make my own decisions about how i thought things should be done for the whole office. That rarely happens in the world of internships. I was so lucky! I feel very lucky.
This office is truly one of the most friendly environments I have ever worked in. Its one big family! Everyone laughs all day, teases each other, works insanely hard, is so passionate about what they do and is aware of this great opportunity so they are always grateful. I've been noticing more and more some of these aspects to the office the last few months as I have been thinking more about leaving and not being around everyone. Its really inspiring to have been able to get to know these people and to know that in general, they exist and that this office exists. This is the exact type of work and work environment I hope to surround myself with in my future career.
My boss arranged for cake and the whole office was invited to meet downstairs in the kitchen for a quick farewell party. Everyone that wasn't out in the field as the refugee camps or host communities came. It was a good 30-40 people. My boss said many nice words and made a little speech and then offered me the floor. So I thanked everyone and said a few things as well.
It was a very nice way to say goodbye and thank you. I will truly miss this! <3
