Wild Flower Lawn

This is almost the first time in my life when the ground in front of the house I live in has no regular lawn-grass. It is certainly the first time the front lawn has been a high wall of wildflowers.

In the 1990s I used to visit Madison, Wisconsin a lot, and there was a drawn-out legal quarrel between a local family and all the other households on their block. The issue was that the family planted wildflowers, just like mine, both in front and behind their house. All the others had mowed green grass. They pointed out that no complaint came from them, even though the majority used pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which travel along any street. the final outcome, after much publicity, was that most of the front flowers had to be cut flat, and the back yard stayed as it was.

Philadelphia is very different from Madison, but we have sections where the flowers might well draw flack. But here in my neighborhood, they draw smiles and compliments only. The idea of opposing this would not occur, and if it did, one would just roll the eyes.

There is a pumpkin plant in there, and I have to intervene every few days so that it doesn't overwhelm and pull down my little fig & oak trees. plants can be bullies!
