Street Scene 1
Another day of horrible weather and decided to go into town for a wander and take some photos.
I wonder what she has bought, is it for herself or a member or her family?
Been reading up on Vivian Maier a lot over the last couple of days, it must have been easier taking photos of strangers with her Rolleiflex as she did who she was taking a picture of.
I wonder what she would have made of digital cameras - she only died in 2009 but by then had given up taken photos - in a way I think she would have liked the fact that you don't need to use a processor to develop the photos - she was always so secretive about her hobby, no one she knew was aware that she did this although they certainly would have seen her with her camera, I think most people thought it was just for show - especially in the 50s and 60s when there weren't that many female photogs about.
For a while she did her own processing and printing, but had to give that up, as a nanny she moved from family to family and used her private bathroom as a darkroom, sadly she moved in with a family and no longer had this option so had to use processors.
She left over 3000 rolls of film undeveloped and the underlying question is why sis she feel the compulsion to shoot a roll of film a day documenting streets of Chicago and why did she never show anyone her work?
Alas we will never know.
I think it's harder today to take street photos because everyone has a camera and to be honest people really aren't that interesting - most of the time people out on the streets are too busy looking at their phones or talking on their phones.
Even in coffee shops - no one reads a paper anymore - they are to busy on their iPads or laptops, to me that doesn't look interesting, but I guess that means we will just have to look harder.
