The Scottish Tapestry
This was my last day at the festival. Firstly we went to the National Portrait Gallery for 'Sitting Ducks', the John Byrne exhibition, followed by the Ruskin one - interesting, but I understand why he never exhibited his work in his lifetime. We had a whirl on the Big Wheel on Princes Street before walking towards Chambers St for the Ming exhibition. On the way I remembered that the Scottish tapestry, depicting Scotland's history, was back in the Parliament building so we rushed down the High Street to see that instead. (We had to dash as we had tickets for the talk by Ben Macintyre about his book on Kim Philby, the Cambridge spy). Therefore we were not able to give the tapestry the time it deserved. By some very strange coincidence I happened to glance down at the names of the sewers of one panel, to discover that of my sister-in-law, who died last summer. I don't know when she sewed her bit of the panel, the Duns Scotius one, but I'm pretty sure she never saw the whole tapestry, all 200+ panels of it, exhibited as one piece. I felt quite emotional and strange. I am so glad she has such a wonderful memorial.
