Hints at past glories

Cluny Abbey was the largest church in Christendom for five centuries, until St Peter's Basilica in Rome was built. Now only the southern transept and the bell tower and a few other fragments remain. This is the south transept, and although the perspective is a bit distorted because it's stitched together from two photographs, it gives an idea of the phenomenally grand scale of the building. There's a drawing of the complete abbey here. Cath's blip shows it from the outside together with a virtual view.
