The sunflower seedlings have grown in spite of Hector's nibbling of the foliage. The black sunflower seeds are those rejected by the birds. They have fallen on the soil below and survived amazingly.
Note the Montbretia on the other side of the gate which has been rolled flat by Hector. He has given it a good thrashing earlier on in the season when my back was turned. He always enjoys a good roll!
