The Wren

made with love

These items had travelled with me from Scotland, hand sewn by myself and good friends for the little babies. We gave them a good wash after their journey in my suitcase and they took no time to dry in the fabulous warm air out here - it varies from 33' to 40'.

As any of you know who have been on this NICU journey - it is a long and emotional roller coaster ride and you never know what to expect when you open the doors to visit the tiny babies who are receiving the most amazing care. Today was a bit bumpy with both girls a little unstable with their breathing, with the littlest one in particular causing concern. However my daughter-in-law was still able to change the nappy of the bigger twin who is no longer totally reliant on a ventilator but instead has little prongs in her nose which augment her own breathing with extra short bursts of oxygen. Then, most amazingly, the baby was gently lifted out of her isolette by a nurse, numerous wires still attached to the various computerised monitors, and carefully placed on the chest of my daughter-in-law where the two of them stayed cosied up for an hour, during which time the tiny soul slept peacefully. She looked very sweet in one of the new hats (they are a size to fit over a tennis ball!) and had one of the new quilts around her keeping her warm as she nestled in skin to skin with her mummy. This is known as 'Kangaroo Care' and it was a magical and emotional sight. The lights were completely dimmed during the process and the curtains pulled around the area where the two isolettes are standing attached to their computers and the only disturbance was when the nurse responsible for the care of both twins intermittently attended to the requirements of the littlest baby as and when monitors required her to do so with their urgent beeping. I had my IPod with me and quietly listened to my music while my son researched on his phone for information following the latest news from the doctors.

Moments like these remain with you for ever.
