Raffles Statue in Singapore

Sir Stamford Raffles, FRS (1781 – 1826) was the founder of the city of Singapore (now the Republic of Singapore) and also the London Zoo.

He is described as the "Father of Singapore", where this statue stands in front of the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall. His name lives on in Singapore where numerous institutions are named after the City's Founder. He is also often described as the "Father of the London Zoo", and his memory lives on in Rafflesia, a genus of parasitic flowering plants, known for having the largest flowers in the world.

Raffles was also heavily involved in the conquest of the Indonesian island of Java from Dutch and French military forces during the Napoleonic Wars. He wrote a book titled History of Java (1817).

The building in the background connects the two concert halls with a clock tower and was built in 1909.
