The Darker Side Of Edinburgh
The boarded up corner premises used to be a 'Fingertips Sauna'; Sauna being a euphemism in Edinburgh for a brothel. Our city council has had a tolerance policy toward them as their view is workers are safer in licensed/monitored premises than walking the streets. It's an unsavoury subject and the whole trade degrades everyone involved. Sadly it will never go away so I tend to hold my nose and agree with the council's strategy. Glasgow City Council take the exact opposite tack with a zero tolerance policy toward prostitution.
'Fingertips' closed a good few years ago and the property lay empty for rent. Now work is going on to convert it into a cafe/takeaway, a much more wholesome use!
In 2002 this row of buildings was hit by a leak from the Union Canal which runs close by, ground floor properties were flooded knee deep. Possibly this contributed to the 'sauna' closing down.
