Bones

This is a bone. A really old one and I think it is part of a vertebrae.
The cove in which I live was once home to Native Americans. There were only five permanent settlements on the Island and Howlands Landing happened to be one of them. Many years ago a midden site (ancient landfill) was found just above a cliff over the ocean. A road was built (dug) and the building of this road and subsequent rain fall has unearthed many different archeological artifacts. Tools, bones and many shells have all been found here. The Native Americans, called Pimuvits, lived here for over six thousand years and were here as recently as three hundered years ago. The artifacts we find normally break apart in our fingers as they are extremely old, but it's really neat to see shells from animals we still see in the ocean today. This bone is about two and a half inches in diameter, and the biggest animal (other than human) living on the land, during the time of the Pimuvits, was a very small fox. It might belong to a marine mammal or something entirely different. I'll never really know, but it it sure was fun finding it.
