Lucky break today! When I arrived at the northeast corner trench, there were workers continuing the dig. They answered the what-are-you-doing question.
They are installing air conditioning in each room (which will be useful since Rosa Parks is a year round school) and the deep trenches are to keep the electrical lines and conduits from accidental disturbance from any future digging.
