. . . . near the Norfolk village of Denver. A system of drainage channels and diversion of the Great Ouse was commenced in the 1650s, master-minded by (Sir) Cornelius Vermuyden - no prizes for guessing his country of origin. The system has been improved over the years.

The aim of course was to drain the flooded flatlands known as the Fens so they could be farmed and inhabited.
