Meet Jay Mushinskie
A friend and I only had a brief time to visit one of our favourite wineries (Melville) today. As we left (having collected his order) and on a whim, we popped in next door to Babcock Winery and Vineyards where we met Jay.
What started as a quick trip just to buy a tasting glass for a colleague turned into a most enjoyable tasting experience in the company of a most interesting and knowledgeable man. Jay studied classical music and played professionally before turning his hand to viticulture some years ago. To a soundtrack that included Queen, Led Zeppelin and Tom Petty we discussed the finer points of a collection of Babcock's Pinot Noirs and the effects of music on the soul. It sounds heavy, but I assure you it wasn't - what a difference from a conventional tasting session where you often feel the host is interested more in your money than having a positive experience.
I did buy two bottles (Microcosm and Slice of Heaven), both of which I recommend.
My friend bought three bottles and we both left with smiles on our faces.
Thanks Jay - you are a credit to Babcock.
