Sunday Style

I have chosen to blip the style of our village church as today's Style Sunday Challenge.

St James the Great, Bierton has seen more than 700 years of worship. In 1294 the Rev Robert de Thame was appointed vicar of the then lucrative parish. At that time, Bierton was only a small hamlet and there must have been reasons, other than the village population, for its large size. These reasons are likely to be the pilgrims passing through visiting the holy well adjacent, now known as St Osyth’s well.
The architectural style of St James’s church dates back to the 14th century as evidenced by the pillars and arches supporting the tower. The roof has been replaced – probably in the 15th/16th century when walls of the north and south aisles were raised and clerestory window added to lighten the interior.
As always, a church is more than a building, and St James has strong support within the community although forever in need of money to maintain its ancient structure.
It is good to have such a solid demonstration of Christian commitment in such a prominent position, on view to everyone passing.

Since we have lived here, my son was christened in the 12th century font, my daughter married there and Sophie (her daughter and the subject of yesterday's blip) was also christened at St James's. I'm sure it will remain the focus of many family gatherings in the future.
