Traditional fence

How do you build a fence using only forest products?  This used to be the traditional way, using roots to knot the fence together. It takes a lot of time but the materials are freely available so in the times when time was not a problem but there was no money to buy materials this was how things were done.
Nowadays of course it is the opposite situation. "Time is money" and materials are cheap, which means this type of fence has become a luxury product, costing Skr 1000 (£88) per metre.
This particular fence is around Rö community hall and I guess it was built by volunteers a long time ago. The roots are no longer knotting the cross pieces to the pole but I hope the idea is clear.
In the background you see the Baltic, and the island of Hemsö.
Another warm sunny late summer day.
Update - 2019 - The "ties" are not made of roots, as I thought, but of smaller fir tree branches, split in two and (I think) soaked before tying.
