Anatomical lecture theater Uppsala
Rain today so lunch was spent explororing the new and old learning spaces of the University!
The anatomical theatre at Gustavianum, Uppsala University was used as a kind of demonstration facility for teaching medicine. It was built in 1663 in a cupola on top of the building and until 1766 dissections were carried out in front of medical students and a paying public on criminals who had been executed, but mostly on animals.
Thankfully it's no longer used by the medical faculty but is part of the Gustavianum museum. Can't help wondering how many students have fainted in there and to be carried out down the steep stairs...
