The Fish

Amsterdam's city parks are very well used, particularly in the summer. Picnics are very common and many people bring portable barbeques to cook in the park. Kevin and I went for a long walk this evening through the Vondelpark, the Leidseplein, and into the City Centre. We circled back along the sidestreets between Overtoom and the park.

Along the way, we stopped to take photos of the storks and the herons, as well as the activity in the park and on the streets. Amsterdam's architecture and canals are always interesting, too. The photo is typical of the park, with an outdoor exercise group, bikes, picnics, barbeque haze, and public art for all to enjoy.

Pablo Picasso's 1965 concrete sculpture, often referred to as The Fish, was donated by the artist as a permanent installation to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the park. The official name of the sculpture is Decoupe (which means divided), but it is listed in the Stedelijk Museum as l'Oiseau (bird).
