THIN PLACES

Iona is apparently a 'thin place'- a blessed spot where the veil between earth and heaven is tissue thin. I'm not sure how I feel about that notion. I imagine that if we visit a place deemed to be particularly holy we may bring these expectations with us. I've had some of my most spiritually barren experiences in the most so-called holy places- the Garden of Gethsemane, for example.

That does not mean, however, that I do not experience 'thinness' - profound experiences of wonder and joy that transcend immediate surroundings and conditions. I didn't experience this on Iona today (although for the benefit of the Teen I did walk solemnly and meditatively around the cloisters) but I was in a fat and happy place - paddling in the sea, dancing and cavorting on the sand, wallowing in being reunited with the Professor.
