Hughenden Manor
Today I went to visit a nearby National Trust property, Hughenden Manor. This beautiful house was home to the politician and Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, from 1848 to 1881.
In addition to the Disraeli connection, Hughenden housed a top-secret World War 2 mapping unit, codenamed 'Hillside' and was high on Hitler's hit list. This secret past only came to light 10 years ago as an elderly visitor was overheard explaining to his accompanying family what he used to do here during the war.
As well as the formal gardens there is a Victorian Walled garden and an extensive parkland, 1400 acres. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and later on 'afternoon tea' (and coffee), with scones and clotted cream in the Stable restaurant.
