More Forrest Gump scenes in Savannah
Today we took a four-hour walking tour of Savannah with a guide who didn't think slavery was altogether a bad thing, wanted to impress on us that Lincoln is generally regarded as a war criminal and kept on referring to the First Day of Creation: 'If you want to know about black history, there 's other tours you can go on.'
Here is a picture of the steeple which features at the beginning of Forrest Gump (when the camera is following the floating feather). This is the only bit of the tour which we are confident was true.
This was another day on which we had biscuits with every meal. Lunch was Southern Fried Chicken with biscuits and gravy in a really posh riverside restaurant. It was amazing.
The waiter was concerned that we might be shocked by the size of the portions, but I explained that after three weeks we felt that we had made the adjustment. When he came back after ten minutes to see our gleaming clean plates his eyes widened and he said, 'My, you have become accustomed' before offering us the dessert menu with the caveat, 'even Americans don't often have dessert with lunch'. The desserts looked sensational but we declined in an attempt to preserve some dignity.
We're now in Charleston. Charleston is supposed to be the friendliest city in the United States, so we'll try not to alienate them.
Tomorrow is our last day!
