Great Ancoats Street...
The recession, at least in Manchester, seems to be well and truly over with buildings going up all over the city centre again. It's good to see the cranes back. And, we are told, the population is growing at such a rate that we have run out of apartments to house them in.
This apartment tower is nearing completion of busy Great Ancoats Street, where the trendy N4 meets up and coming New Islington. It was one of the schemes that ground to a halt in 2008 at the beginning of the banking crisis. The person who was having it built didn't see to have the funds to back the project up and it was stopped. He also had a block of apartments in Manchester so poorly built, it had to be worked on almost as soon as it was finished. There were projects in the USA that ground to a halt as well. Then there was a story about a government grant to make a feature film where the money went astray. A lot of that kind of thing went on pre banking crisis.
I like this building with its curved corners that echo the Art Deco Daily Express building just along the street. The grey cladding, with the flashes of yellow and red, was interesting to watch go on as it started from the top and came down the building rather than the usual ground floor up.
