If only, if only, the woodpecker sighs ...
I'm not a great fan of Woodpeckers or any other bird on a feeder really, but this was a clear shot and one of the best of the batch on my visit to Pennington Flash. This is the Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), and the red patch on the head shows he is a male (in the female it is missing). If you want to see some of the other birds I shot at the same time visit here.
BTW, the quote is from Louis Sachar (Holes):
“If only, if only," the woodpecker sighs,
"The bark on the tree was as soft as the skies."
While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,
Crying to the moo-oo-oon,
"If only, If only.”
