Two things are certain when you hire a scooter.

One - you'll never be asked to show any sort of driving licence (for a car or scooter, indonesian or other). The only prerequisite is that you have enough money, and if you do, its yours for the day.

Two - it will be empty on gas and instructed to 'top it up immediately at one of the of petrol stations along the road, just look for the kind that comes in a absolute vodka bottle'. Being the penny pinching backpackers that we are, we followed suit and only topped up one litre at a time (about 35p) and rode it until we were dry.
