Lazy Day, Lazy Blip, #Elland Bridge

Today was quite a contrast after the warm sunshine and excitement of yesterday. The tail end of hurricane Bertha paid us a visit so there was little prospect of doing much outdoors.

I nipped out to the supermarket for the most overpriced courgettes this side of Huddersfield and on leaving the shop around 4pm the sun was shining and the sky was blue for a whole ten minutes. So I stopped off at Elland Bridge to get a quick blip of the canal near the Barge and Barrel.

Elland is entered in the Domesday book under Ealand (Anglo-Saxon'ea'water and'land'dwelling).

The present bridge spans the canal and then the River. The river bridge was the site of a ducking stool and a series of wooden bridges were built and rebuilt as early as 1199.The first stone bridge of 1579 had poor foundations and had to rebuilt in 1584 This in turn was swept away in 1615. The canal was constructed in 1757.
