Art and Design
This book ''The Cuillin of Skye' is an example of fine bookbinding. At this level it is not only creativity needed but the skills of a bookbinder. It is an old book that has been rebound using dyed goatskins. The design represents the ridge of the Cuillin Hills in black with the lower hills in dark blue and the sea in paler blue. The red at the base represents the volcanic upthrust that created the hills. The grey leather was chosen as the base colour of the book to ensure the other colours were shown at their best.
Shortly after this book was bound it was exhibited in the British Library in a national bookbinding exhibition.
