Tayport Pile Lighthouse
Today, I went for a boat trip on the Tay Estuary in the hope of seeing the pod of bottlenose dolphins that live there at this time of year... unfortunately, not one single solitary dolphin surfaced while I was watching.
Oh well... I'll just have to try again some time, and the boat trip was fun. This is the thing about wildlife... you can't take anything for granted!
So instead of a dolphin blip, you've got this wooden lighthouse, which stands about 500 metres from Tayport Harbour. It's one of only a few surviving pile lighthouses in the UK... built in 1845 and consisting of a lantern on a small, square wooden building on top of wooden piles. It stopped being operational around 1960.
