Sandside Quarry, Storth
Sandside Quarry is the largest and last of the limestone quarries in the Arnside/Silverdale AONB. This section shows just a part of the total. It was originally opened in 1901. In recent decades it must have provided hundreds of thousands of tons of limestone aggregate and I believe that under the surface of many of the motorways on which you drive there will be stone from here. And yet it is not easily seen from the road and to take pictures one must climb up paths through the woods.
Three other major quarries in the AONB are closed. Two of them, Trowbarrow and Warton have become important nature reserves. The third, Middlebarrow , is resting but we hope at sometime it will also become a significant reserve.
A nice evening for a walk round the perimeter even if we did not manage to get to the top.
