Gertrude
Gertrude is alone again. Bluebell had a fluke accident yesterday and broke her neck on my garden gate in a sort of suicidal voodoo ritual. I am so sad as she was a beautiful and sweet-natured creature. Gertrude has survived all sorts of threats. For a start she was an escapee meat bird who I stole re-homed in a purpose built oak chicken house (left over material from my extension) eight years ago. Among other adventures, she survived a vicious attack from a dog. She has outlived all the other chickens (another refugee who died of rat poison and two slaves purchased especially as companions, including Bluebell.) Gertrude is huge, affectionate, gentle, subdued, scared and alone. Do I re-home her? I don't think I want more chickens (simply delays the down-to-one problem). It is a miracle that the neighbouring foxes and badgers haven't visited, though they've been close enough to be troubling at night. And please don't suggest I wring her neck. Can't. Shan't!
