Ragwort
We started the morning off by pulling out the few stray ragwort plants from the fields that we are going to cut for haylage. Although the bright yellow flowers add a splash of colour, the plant is poisonous to animals, sow e don't like to get it mixed up with the bales for winter feeding. It didn't take long, and we chopped down a few stray docken plants too. When pulling Ragwort, I am always reminded of the piece in the wonderful book "Crofting agriculture" by Frank Fraser Darling, when he tells of the satisfaction of easily pulling these weeds up by the root. Simple pleasures!
