Dovercourt Lighthouses

We decided to have a Fish and Chip supper at Harwich this evening overlooking the Port of Felixstowe from the other side of the River Orwell. We then walked to Dovercourt and found these unique lighthouses, one on the beach the other in the sea. The notice beside them read Dovercourt Lighthouses. These lighthouses consisting of a high light and a low light formed a pair of leading lights. A ship out at sea could position one light above the other and so steer a safe course into the harbour. They were built in 1863 to replace the brick built leading light on Harwich Green because of changes to the harbour channel. The lights were taken out of use in 1917 after the harbour entrance had been buoyed. Another notice read These unique lighthouses were restored in 1985-1988 by the High Stewards Lighthouse Appeal, with the help of grant aid and the generous support of the public.
To the left of the picture is the Port of Felixstowe. This was taken at 8.40pm and I had to use a flash to get colour in the lighthouse. The nights are drawing in fast.
We got soaked walking the one and a half miles back to the car. Over the weekend we are supposed to get the tail end of Hurricane Bertha, so perhaps it was a taster of things to come!
