Only took just over 18 months from starting work until trains were running over the temporary wooden bridge on the main foundations. Another two years and it was all completed. Still carrying main line traffic at speeds the Victorians couldn't comprehend and with train weights that were unimaginable.
I hear that HS2 will take 17 years to build - we have totally lost the plot.
