Flodden Wall

An image of part of the Flodden Wall built in 1513 around old Edinburgh after the Battle of Flodden.

On the righthand side of the wall there is a carving stating "This window was made in the old city wall with the sanction of the town council 1876"

I wonder why the window was put in?
